Famous Canadian Presentations

Hello parents!  It was so nice to have the opportunity to meet with many of you during parent-teacher interviews.  For those parents that I was not able to meet with during interviews, I would be happy to make some time to speak with you over the phone and answer any questions you may have.  Please email me at angela.reed@ocdsb.ca or write me a note in your child's agenda.

Our next oral presentation will be linked to our Social Studies and French programs.  This presentation will be for both Grade 4's, who will be studying Canada and our Grade 5's, who are wrapping up a unit on Canadian Government and Citizenship.

Attached are the details and the rubric for our presentation.  I am posting the documents given to the students.  The outline of the assignment is in French, however, here is the outline in English for parents:

The students are being asked to prepare a presentation on a famous Canadian.  This presentation should include the following:

1)  Who?  What?  Where?  When?  Why?  How?

2)  What is this famous Canadian's contribution to our country?

3)  The presentation should be approximately 2 - 3 minutes long and should be prepared in advance.  (e.g., not read from notes)

4)  The presentation will include a bristol board with images, title and information regarding the famous Canadian OR, WITH PARENTAL PERMISSION, may be prepared as a PowerPoint presentation at home.  Class time will not be given to prepare this presentation; however, I will be available at recess for students who require assistance.

5)  Students are to write the presentation themselves in their own words.  They are not to copy the words from a book or from the internet.  I have also spoken to the students about using online translators to help translate a few words, but not the entire text.

Students have been provided with, but are not limited to, suggestions of famous Canadians on the information sheet.

November Notes for Parents

Greetings Parents!

Progress reports and interview requests went home with your children tonight.  Unfortunately, there are not enough interview times for me to meet with each family individually.  Should you wish to discuss your child's progress, I would be happy to make arrangements to speak with you by telephone or meet at a different time. Please send me a note, or an email at angela.reed@ocdsb.ca .

The last Scholastic order before Christmas will be going home on Friday.  Should you wish to make a "secret" gift purchase, please send me a note along with your order and I will set the items aside for you.  Orders will be due on Tuesday, November 20th.

Have a great weekend!

Angela.

Bonjour!

October has flown by very quickly!  We have been busy in class finishing up our units on Habitat and Government.  The Grade 4's will be beginning their final assignment in Habitats this week.  They will be working in class to create a diorama of a habitat of their choice.  They can bring in items from home to add to their dioramas.  (I will be providing construction paper, various colours of plasticine, pipe cleaners and paints.  The students are encouraged to bring items from home to add to their dioramas.) I look forward to seeing their creations!

The Grade 5's will be working this week on The Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and discussing some of the rights we enjoy as Canadian citizens.  As part of our Government unit, the Grade 5's are also busy in class preparing a short presentation on a Canadian Symbol of their choice.

The presentations of "Ma vie dans un sac" are now all complete.  The students were well prepared and impressed us all with their varied interests!  It was a pleasure to be able to get to know the students a little more through their presentations.  In the near future, the students will be preparing their next presentations to share with the class.

A few notes for this week:

Progress Reports and Interview Request forms will be going home on Thursday.  As I do not have enough time slots to meet with parents of all students in the classroom, not every family will be requested to come in for an interview at this time.  I would be happy to speak with parents outside of interview time, however.  Should you wish to schedule an interview, or speak over the phone, please do not hesitate to contact me through a note in your child's agenda, on the interview request form, or at my email :  angela.reed@ocdsb.ca

Thursday is Library Day.  Our school library was closed last week to make room for some new shelving.  Regular book exchanges will resume this week.

Friday - We will be observing Remembrance Day on Friday.  The students will be attending a Remembrance Day assembly at 11:30 to honour and reflect upon the sacrifices made by our service men and women.

One final note:  There will be NO Journal de Lecture homework this week for students.  We did not have access to the school library for book exchanges.  As such, we will not have a Journal de Lecture entry due on Friday, November 9th.

Angela

English Update - Ms. O'Halloran

English Writing:

This past week students are writing poems about themselves following a specific pattern. Reviewing the writing process stages is natural throughout this project, and I have observed some impressive skills displayed by my awesome authors! I am writing one of my own at the same time. I am a writer, too! We are all writers. J

This week we will publish our good copies in the computer lab.

Finally, we will print these insights into our personalities and display them in the hallway outside our classroom.

Reading:

We will continue to examine, compare and contrast the character traits (ambitious, rude, energetic, determined, brave, hard-working, etc.) possessed by various characters in a book.

Author’s reveal characters and their traits in a number of different ways:

  1. Through what a character says and the way he or she says it.

  2. Through what others say about him or her.

  3. Through his or her actions.

  4. Through what he or she feels or thinks.

While reading at home, ask your child –

“What character traits does this person (character) show?” and “What have they done/said to prove they possess this character trait?”

Making Words Homework

Each Thursday, students recieve a making words assignment to complete by the following Thursday. This work is found in their red English duotang.

English Update - Ms. O'Halloran

Reading:

Please continue to read at home to and with your child in English or ensure daily time is allocated to reading in English. In class students are learning to summarize (retell) a story and include all the characteristics of a story (characters, setting, problem, solution, plot) in their summary. Grade 4 students are identifying the characteristics of a narrative while Grade 5 students are identifying the characteristics of a mystery.

Students are also learning about using surrounding words in a sentence and the context of a sentence to help determine an unknown word.

Students have learned how to partner read and have made their own partner reading bookmarks.

Good readers make connections while they read to better understand and enjoy a text. As a class, we have developed an anchor for relating to a text based on The Name Jar. Students will continue to practice the skill of making connections using prompts such as:

& This reminds me of… (a movie, personal experience, a friend, another book, a song, a place, etc.)

& I remember…

& It makes me think of…

& This (character/setting, event) reminds me of… because…

& It makes me feel…

& That happened to me…

& This (setting, character, problem) is different/similar…

& This sounds like…

& I identify with…

Writing:  Students are learning to use order words (First, Then, Next, Third, Finally) when explaining their work. In addition, we have reviewed examples for their Writer’s Notebook and the expectations for their journals. We have focused on beginning a piece of writing in an interesting way so the reader will be invited to read on.

My Writer’s Notebook Expectations
ü  I always begin with the date.
ü  For ideas I can use my own ideas/feelings/ observations, a writing prompt, or a picture.
ü  Each entry has a main idea and is focused.
ü  I begin my writing in an interesting way (see the 6 great ways to start my writing).
ü  I can include pictures or diagrams.
ü  I include a variety of writing forms (short story, persuasive, poem, procedure, recount, movie review, letter, charts, lists, observations, thinking webs, journal, lists).
ü  I have written about different topics in my notebook.
ü  I always reread my writing. It is thoughtful and I have added ideas when necessary.
ü  I edit using the CUPS strategy (see the inside of your folder).

Students shared their creativity with others this week (poems, stories, lists, charts, webs, journals).

Students are also learning how to use a thesaurus to expand their word choice and use rich vocabulary when writing.

Parents may want to show their child how to access a thesaurus on a word processing program on the computers at home (Word, etc.).

 Homework:

English homework now ‘lives’ in a red duotang. Making Words homework is assigned on Thursday and due back by the next Thursday. Students are required to cut out the letters and manipulate the letters to ensure they can ‘make’ the word they believe makes ‘sense’ in the sentence.

At home ideas:

·        Read a picture book with your child and have them retell the story, including beginning, middle and end.

·        Incorporate reading time before bed.

·        After reading a book – ask your child – What was the author’s purpose in writing this book (persuade, inform, entertain)? Who is the author’s audience? What is the author’s message?

·        While reading, discuss connections you have to your own life, other texts you have read or the world.

October Presentation Calendar

Hello all!

We have had a great first day back after the Thanksgiving weekend!

I am attaching the October calendar for the "Ma vie dans un sac" presentations.

Also, please note that there will be no "Journal de lecture" this week as it is a short week.  By all means, please keep reading in French at home.  I will not be collecting a written assignment based on the reading this week.

Finally, our October Scholastic orders have come home tonight.  They are due on Wednesday, October 17th.  Please do not feel obligated to place an order.  Should you have any questions about some selections in French, please send me a note in your child's agenda.

Have a great evening!

"Ma vie dans un sac" presentation

As promised, here are the instructions and rubric for the "Ma vie dans un sac" oral presentation for this month.

Photo Day Tomorrow!

Don't forget tomorrow is photo day!

I hope that everyone has had a wonderful and restful Thanksgiving weekend!

Wednesday, October 03, 2012

Welcome to our class blog.  It is my hope to use this blog to communicate with parents, post reminders, and post handouts for projects for the times when the "homework monster" eats that very important paper!  :)

I would also like to thank parents for using the agendas for communicating with me.  I do look at the agendas every morning before announcements, so this is the best way to leave me a message.  The class blog is set up not to accept comments, due to the private nature of parent / teacher communications.

As part of our homework program, the students will be asked to make an oral presentation once every month or month and a half.  Beginning next week, we will start our classroom presentations.  I will be sending home a calendar with a presentation date for each student, an evaluation rubric, and the criteria for the presentation.  The presentation will be explained to all students so they will be aware of what to do, and of what the expectations are.

Each student will be asked to bring in 5 items in a bag of their choosing.  The five items in the bag should be representative of who they are,  and of what their interests are.  Some ideas are, but the students are not limited to, a family photo, a soccer medal, pictures of a favourite food, team or sport.  Please do not send in valuable items such as coin collections or items that are breakable, please!  The students will be asked to make a presentation of approximately 3 minutes, but not longer than 5 minutes.

Enjoy the long weekend!  Happy Thanksgiving!

Regards,

Mme Angela Reed
